15 Month Old Toddler Suffers Severe Rash and Respiratory Distress From Exposure to Pyramid Lake Blue-Green Algae Toxin
Pyramid Lake Algae Sends 15 Month Old Toddler to Emergency Room – A 15 month old boy was rushed to the hospital by ambulance when he suffered an allergic reaction to the algae in the water at Pyramid Lake in Castaic, California. On Sunday morning, July 23, 2017, the boy and his family were swimming in the lake, when the boy suddenly developed hives and swelling over 50% of his body. The portion of his body that was exposed to the water began swelling, and he quickly exhibited signs of respiratory distress. His lips began to turn blue, prompting the lifeguard to call the fire department and paramedics.
The boy was given antihistamines, and after several hours in the hospital emergency room, his condition began to improve and he was later released.
Pyramid Lake, which is near the Interstate 5 in the Angeles National Forest, is a reservoir fed by Piru Creek near Castaic. The recreational body of water is a part of the California State Water Project and is the deepest lake in the system.
On July 6, 2017, tests revealed unsafe levels of microcystin, a dangerous blue-green algae toxin. The swimming area was closed, and the rest of the lake was issued a “caution” advisory, warning boaters to avoid contact with the water. The algae is especially harmful to young children and pets. Last year alone, several people fell ill after exposure to the water at Pyramid Lake. Cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae, produces strong dangerous toxins that sicken people and animals.
There were no visible signs posted last weekend at the lake according to the victim's family. The victim and his family entered the water with no idea of the danger that awaited them. Within 20 minutes, the child was in distress and transported to the hospital by ambulance.
