CHP Shut DOwn 91 Freeway Sunday Morning Due to Accident That Killed One and Serious Injured Another
Fatal Santa Fe Springs Crash Shuts Down 91 Freeway Sunday – A fatal Car crash, killing one man and seriously injuring another, caused a Sig-Alert this morning at 2:30 a.m. on the 91 freeway. According to the California Highway Patrol, all of the freeway lanes heading west in Santa Fe Springs were shut down for just over one hour. CHP accident investigators and first responders worked on cleaning up the fatal car crash accident scene, opening one lane at a time, until all lanes were finally clear by 5:00 a.m.
A passenger sedan flipped and went over the center divider of the 91 fwy near the 605 freeway, landing upside down. Early CHP reports indicated that it was a black Chevy, and that there was only a driver, who crawled out of his car and was transported to the local trauma center with serious injuries. The other vehicle involved in the freeway car crash was a Toyota Corolla, unknown color. The man who was driving the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene of the major car collision.
The fact that the car accident took place just after 2:00 a.m., when drinking establishments close, could possibly indicate that there was intoxication involved as a factor in the fatal car wreck. California Vehicle Code Section 23153(a) states that it is illegal to drive under the influence of alcohol which “causes bodily injury to any person other than the driver.” If accident investigators determines that alcohol is a factor in any car crash, and that the surviving victim who suffered serious personal injuries was not the driver at fault, then the person driving in violation of CVC 23153(a) could be charged with a felony and face jail time or prison.
