Fire began from an solo fatal automobile accident in Azusa San Gabriel mountains.
AZUSA, CA (JUNE 21, 2016) – Single Car Accident Ignites San Gabriel Fire Update -Fire personnel have named the two fires as the Fish Fire and the Reservoir Fire, which are separated by one canyon. The driver of the car which sparked the initial fire was killed and died at the scene of the accident. The vehicle went off the road on Highway 39 in Azusa. The impact of the collision, combined with the high temperature, ignited the fire which is still burning out of control.
The fire started along the San Gabriel River near Morris Dam. An employee at the dam called 911 when he saw the flames. Authorities have been battling two huge fires in the Angeles National Forest near Azusa, California since yesterday, and the fires are not yet contained. The fires stared in the brush of the Azusa San Gabriel mountains ignited by a driver in a single car accident who could possible be held morally liable for reckless behavior. The record breaking heat was a factor in creating the uncontrolled blazes.
Smoke fills the air from the fire, and can been seen from Rancho Cucamonga to Los Angeles. Ash from the fire is falling in Glendora, Azusa, West Covina, La Verne, San Dimas, Claremont, Montclair and Upland. Driving on the 210 Freeway reveals just how large the smoke from the fire spreads across the San Gabriel Valley.
The temperature has reached record breaking heat of over 105 degrees in the Valley, which has been a contributing factor to the blaze, currently being battled by hundreds of Firefighters, the National Forest Service, and local agencies, since yesterday. No homes were damaged, as of yet. Roads in Duarte and some roads in Azusa have been closed, and the authorities are evacuating residents.
